Why Calgary?
Calgary is a city of one million people nestled between the wide-open prairies and the majestic Rocky Mountains. Well known for the Calgary Stampede,
the greatest outdoor show on earth
and the 1988 Winter Olympics, Calgary has a great deal more to offer!
Calgary is one of two major cities in the province of Alberta (the other being the capital - Edmonton, to the north). Alberta has one of the strongest economies in Canada with vast resources of oil and gas to 'fuel' the economy well into the future. Not many people realize that Alberta has more oil than Saudi Arabia! Calgary has a diverse economy, originally built on the wealth of oil and gas, but today far less dependant on it than in the past. Calgary has the highest concentration of head offices outside of Toronto and opportunities in almost every field of employment.
Despite its wealth and prosperity, in relation to many other major Canadian cities Calgary enjoys a lower cost of living, and in particular you will find house purchase more affordable.
Well known for their friendliness Calgarians soon make you feel welcome with their 'western' hospitality. Calgary is a very family orientated city and you'll often see parents and children sharing in family activities.
Although Calgary's population is large it is still smaller than many other Canadian cities and has retained its small town appeal. Much of Calgary is made up of small communities that have all the amenities they need on their doorstep. The population has grown to what it is today primarily through migration. Indeed, much of the increase in recent years is as a result of Canadians moving to Calgary from other provinces in order to share in Calgary's success.
The province of Alberta is larger than many countries of the world (for example it is larger than the United Kingdom) and yet it has a total population of about three million people (two thirds of which live in either Calgary or Edmonton).
Alberta has no provincial sales tax (PST) and is currently the only province in this situation. It also has one of the lowest provincial income tax rates in Canada. Alberta is also the only province in Canada where you can assume someone else's mortgage without having to qualify with income or employment. This makes buying a property, even with only a small down payment, very easy. For more details on home/business purchase please visit our Calgary Realtor webpage.
